What is an age spot?

Age spots, also known as sun spots, are flat areas of pigmentation that can appear on the skin with age, or due to frequent sun exposure.

They’re caused by concentrated melanin, most commonly on areas that are exposed to the sun more such as the face, hands, chest, shoulders and arms.

Whilst harmless, people sometimes choose to get them removed as they can make the skin look uneven or prematurely aged.

Age spots typically are;

  • Flat blemishes, as opposed to raised

  • Range from light to dark brown in colour

  • Have defined edged

  • Increase in size over time

How to remove age spots?

There are two methods most suited to treating age spots or sun spots; cryotherapy and advanced electrolysis thermolysis.

Cryotherapy: Targets the spot with controlled freezing that works to break down the pigment.

Advanced Electrolysis Thermolysis: Allows for precise removal of the pigment by using a fine heated probe to cauterise the blemish.

If you have multiple age spots, depending on the area of the body and how many you have, they may be able to be treated all at once in one session. Or, you may require multiple sessions to allow for necessary downtime.

How advanced electrolysis & cryotherapy treats age spots

Advanced electrolysis thermolysis is a precise treatment often chosen for age spots due to the control it allows. A very fine probe delivers a controlled burst of high-frequency energy directly into the pigmented area. This energy is converted into gentle heat, which breaks down or lifts away the concentrated melanin within the age spot and stimulates the skin’s natural healing response.

Cryotherapy uses a targeted application of extremely cold gas to freeze the pigmented cells. The freezing action causes the cells to break down, allowing the body to gradually clear them away.

When removing a blemish like an age spot, the area can temporarily darken before naturally shedding to reveal new skin cells underneath.

What to expect after treatment

For the first 24 hours after age spot removal, you must keep the area dry and clean. Avoid applying active skincare products, including retinol, exfoliating acids or fragranced products, until the skin has fully settled.

Due to the type of blemish, it’s completely normal for the area to darken or crust initially. Try not to pick or remove any of the dry skin, as this may affect the healing time or cause pigmentation changes. The skin will naturally shed as it heals.

Direct sun exposure should be avoided whilst the area heals, and you should apply SPF 50 daily to protect the new skin. Continue to keep the area moisturised with a gentle, soothing product to support the healing process.
