What is milia?
Milia is a small, firm cyst that appears on its own or in clusters, typically on the face.
It forms when keratin becomes trapped beneath the surface of the skin, creating a small cyst. Similar in appearance to the white head of a spot, they can bother people. Whilst completely harmless, for this reason, many people choose to get them removed.
Some of their characteristics may include;
-
Small and dome-shaped
-
Appear white or cream in colour
-
Firm to the touch
-
Do not have an opening
They are most often found around the eyes, cheeks and forehead.
How to remove milia?
Milia removal is a quick, straightforward procedure. Once we’ve confirmed that the blemish is milia and it’s safe to remove, we will recommend the best course of treatment.
At The Expert Blemish Clinic in Northampton, for this kind of blemish, we will typically opt for a sterile extraction or advanced electrolysis. As milia is very small, we can usually remove it in just one session, with minimal downtime.
How advanced electrolysis thermolysis treats milia
Milia are small, keratin-filled cysts that sit just beneath the skin, so they can’t be removed like a typical spot. At The Expert Blemish Clinic, we use advanced electrolysis to gently open the surface and release the trapped keratin. This is a precise, controlled treatment that targets the milia without damaging the surrounding skin.
What to expect after treatment
Treatment is quick and well tolerated, with a mild heat or pricking sensation. The area may appear slightly red afterwards, with small surface marks that form light crusts as they heal. These usually settle within a few days. Most milia can be treated in one session, although follow-up may be needed depending on the number and depth.
