What is sebaceous hyperplasia?
Sebaceous hyperplasia is completely harmless and occurs simply when oil glands become enlarged and visible. These glands can often increase in size and age, with common causes including oily skin, sun damage and natural aging.
Sebaceous hyperplasia typical characteristics include:
-
Being yellow or skin coloured
-
Have a central indentation
-
Are commonly found on the face
They are most commonly found on the forehead, cheeks and nose but can also appear on the chest.
How to treat sebaceous hyperplasia?
Sabaceous Hyperplasia treatment is a simple procedure which is carried out frequently at The Expert Blemish Clinic.
Patients will usually see their desired result within 1 session, with multiple lesions being able to be treated at the same time. However, depending on the extent of the lesions, we may require multiple sessions. This will be evaluated and discussed in your consultation appointment.

At The Expert Blemish Clinic, we use advanced electrolysis thermolysis to treat sebaceous hyperplasia with precision. This method uses a small probe with electrical current to dehydrate and seal off the lesion, often only taking seconds.
How advanced electrolysis thermolysis treats sebaceous hyperplasia
Advanced electrolysis thermolysis and cryotherapy are effective treatments used to treat sebaceous hyperplasia.

With thermolysis, a fine probe delivers controlled heat directly into the lesion. This heat gently dehydrates and breaks down the enlarged oil gland. This works as the high-frequency alternating current causing moisture in the gland to evaporate, breaking down the papule.

This precise treatment onky affects the targeted blemish, leaving the surrounding skin healthy and intact.
What to expect after treatment
Following the treatment of sebaceous hyperplasia, it’s normal to see a small, dry scab form at the site. It is important to leave this scab to heal on it's own, with no picking. The scab will fall off naturally in roughly 7 to 14 days.

It is also normal to experience mild discomfort with this form of treatment, which is often described as a warm stinging sensation. This may leave behind some redness or sensitivity, lasting up to 48 hours.
If you notice signs of infection, increasing pain or delayed healing or are at all worried, please contact us and we will advise.

1. Book a blemish consultation
We require all patients to undergo a screening before any treatment is booked. At your consultation, your skin and your skin concerns will be carefully assessed and identified.
If there is any blemish which concerns us, further screening is carried out through the Map My Mole service. We will send an image of the blemish which we are unsure of to a specialised dermatologist, who will then send us a report of their findings within 24-48 hours. If there is no further concern, we can continue with the treatment plan.
2. Sebaceous hyperplasia treatment
Once your blemish has been confirmed as sebaceous hyperplasia, we will book you in for your treatment plan. Depending on the extent of your blemish, you may require multiple sessions. This will be determined in your consultation.
Your consultation will provide you with a full brief surrounding the treatment process for sebaceous hyperplasia.
