A fibrous papule is a common, harmless skin growth that usually appears on the nose or central area of the face. It does not pose any health risk, but many people choose to have it removed for cosmetic reasons or because it becomes more noticeable over time.
Fibrous papules are something we regularly assess and treat as part of our specialist blemish removal services.
What is fibrous papule?
Fibrous Papules are small, firm benign growths which typically appear around the nose. They usually form in mid-adulthood and typically are solitary. Due to their appearance, they are commonly mistaken for acne or moles.
What they look like:

Fibrous papule is a buildup of collagen fibres, blood vessels and fibroblast cells. Whilst the cause for fibrous papules is unknown, aging and genetics are commonly associated with the blemishes.
How to treat fibrous papule?
As fibrous papules are harmless, many people choose to get them removed for cosmetic reasons.
At The Expert Blemish Clinic, we primarily use advanced electrolysis for fibrous papule treatment. However, if a patient cannot undergo this procedure for health reasons, we may use cryotherapy instead
How Advanced Electrolysis Treats Fibrous Papule
Advanced electrolysis works by delivering a strong electrical current through a fine needle to the target area. The heat cauterises the blood flow to the lesion, causing the fibrous papule to become dehydrated and eventually fall off.
In most cases, a single session of treatment is sufficient enough to produce the desired result.
How advanced electrolysis treats fibrous papule

How cryotherapy treats fibrous papule
Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrous oxide through a cryo pen to freeze the blemish. The rapid drop in temperature within the lesion causes the water inside the cells to freeze, forming ice crystals. This leads to the cell membranes rupturing, destroying the tissue.
What to expect after treatment
After your blemish has been treated with advanced electrolysis, the site will turn white and then proceed to scab over as the underlying cells heal. This scab will naturally fall off within 7-10 days.
Following cryotherapy treatment, the treated area will turn red and start to swell as the site fills with intracellular fluid. This will usually be followed by a blister forming within 24-48 hours. This blister will eventually heal, leaving behind a scab as the underlying skin heals. Eventually this scab will fall off naturally.

1. Book a blemish consultation
Every lesion is carefully assessed in the clinic before any treatment is considered. We work under medical guidance and follow a strict assessment process that prioritises patient safety, skin health and early detection.
Many benign skin lesions are easy to identify, however some lesions can present in different forms or share visual similarities with more concerning conditions. Because of this, we never rely on assumptions.
If there is ever any uncertainty, or if a lesion does not present typically, further screening is carried out before cosmetic removal. We work in partnership with the Map My Mole screening service and collaborate with leading skin health consultants in the UK. This allows us to submit lesions for clinical review and receive a detailed professional report within 2 to 48 hours.
We will never remove a lesion unless we are completely confident it is safe to do so. Early detection, reassurance and patient-centred care are always the priority.
2. Fibrous Papule Treatment
Once your blemish has been identified as fibrous papule, we will book your appointments for the most appropriate treatment plan. This will be discussed in detail during your consultation.
A full brief of your course of treatment will be provided to you during your initial consultation to ensure you have all the information you need prior to treatment.

3. The follow up
We ask that all patients return for a follow up appointment to check on the progress of your treatment. We typically ask you to wait 6 weeks before your follow up to ensure the treated lesion has adequate downtime for proper healing.
