What is a wart?
Warts are a common skin growth, caused by a viral infection of the skin. They are a type of human papillomavirus (HPV) that causes excess growth of skin cells. Warts can appear on their own or in groups, but may increase in number over time and can spread through direct contact.
They can be small and round in appearance like typical warts, or they can be larger and thread-like in appearance like filiform warts.
Warts may:
-
Be raised and rough
-
Appear skin-coloured, white or grey
-
Have a spiky or thread-like shape (filiform warts)
-
Occur as single lesions or clusters
Whilst mostly painless, they can become irritated, sore or bleed if they’re knocked or in areas where clothes may rub against them.
How to remove warts?
In your blemish consultation, we will analyse your skin blemish to confirm whether it is a wart, and then determine the best course of treatment.
Cryotherapy is the most common treatment for warts, using liquified nitrous oxide administered through a cryopen, to freeze and break down the cells of the wart.
However, in some cases, we may opt for advanced electrolysis.
Wart removal typically requires multiple sessions depending on the number of warts and the size, location and response to treatment.
How we treat warts
Warts are caused by a viral infection that leads to excess keratin in the skin. We treat warts using advanced electrolysis or cryotherapy, depending on the type and location. The treatment works by breaking down the affected tissue and supporting the body’s natural healing response.
What to expect after treatment
You may feel a short, sharp heat or stinging sensation during treatment. Afterwards, the area can look red or slightly raised, and a small scab will form as it heals. Warts can be stubborn, so more than one session is often needed. Healing time varies, and following aftercare advice is important to support results.
Wart Removal at The Expert Blemish Clinic in Northampton
1. Book a blemish consultation
If you’re interested in wart removal, you’ll need to book a blemish consultation at our Northampton clinic.
Although warts are a type of HPV, they are not typically cancerous. However, if we identify any suspicious characteristics of your wart, we will screen it further using our innovative Map My Mole technology. We work in collaboration with leading skin health consultants in the UK and receive a professional report within 2 to 48 hours.
Warts can also be similar in appearance to other skin blemishes, so we like to be 100% sure before removing it.
Once confirmed that it is safe to remove, we can go ahead and book your removal appointment.
2. Wart removal
Following your consultation and final identification of the blemish, your wart removal appointment will be booked with us.
On the day, you will already have been briefed of what to expect, but we’re happy to answer any further questions you may have.
3. The follow up
Your next appointment will likely be a check up to see how the blemish is healing so far. If it requires further treatment, and we’re happy with the progress, we will proceed with the next session of treatment.
Once all sessions have been completed, you’ll have a final follow up appointment to ensure you’re happy with how it’s looking and that the removal area is healing correctly.
