What is a blood spot?

A blood spot, also known as a cherry angioma, is a small benign cluster of dilated blood vessels which form within the skin. These dots can appear for a number of reasons including aging, genetics or sun exposure.

Blood spots can vary in size and shape across the skin with common characteristics such as:

  • Being flat or slightly raised

  • Bright red, dark red or purple in colour

  • Can be round or oval in shape

It is normal for blood spots to increase in number over time and are usually painless. It is also normal for them to bleed from time to time if they are caught or scratched.

How to remove blood spots?

Blood spot removals are a simple procedure which The Expert Blemish Clinic carries out frequently.

To see full clearance of the blood spot, patients usually require 1-2 sessions. Small spots can disappear after a single session, while larger more stubborn spots may require up to 3 sessions before patients see their desired result. Multiple lesions can often be treated in a single session, although a larger number of lesions may need to have a staged treatment plan.

How advanced electrolysis thermolysis treats blood spots

Blood spots, also known as cherry angiomas, are small clusters of blood vessels that appear on the surface of the skin. They are completely benign and very common.

We treat blood spots using advanced electrolysis (thermolysis), which applies a controlled heat to the area to safely coagulate the vessels. This process breaks down the blood supply within the lesion, allowing the body to naturally reabsorb and clear it over time.

What to expect after treatment

You may feel a quick, warm or slightly sharp sensation during your treatment.

Immediately afterwards, the area may appear darker, slightly raised, or red. A small crust or scab can form as part of the normal healing process. In many cases, blood spots respond well in one session, but larger or more stubborn lesions may require additional treatments.

Healing is usually straightforward, and following aftercare advice will support the process.

1. Book a blemish consultation

We require all patients to undergo a screening consultation before any treatment is performed. Every lesion is carefully assessed, and although they are usually easy to identify, we still follow the same gold-standard assessment process for safety and reassurance.

If there is any uncertainty around a blemish, further screening is carried out through the Map My Mole service. We will send an image of the blemish which concerns us to a specialised dermatologist, who will then send us a report of their findings within 24-48 hours. If there is no further concern, we can continue with the treatment plan.

2. Blood spot removal

If your blemish has been confirmed as a blood spot, we will book you in for a removal. Depending on the size or number of your blood spots, you may require multiple appointments. This will be determined in your consultation.

Your consultation will provide you with a full brief to ensure you know exactly what will happen and how the procedure will work.

You can find us situated within Dallington Fitness on Poyntz Lane, offering free parking and a lovely waiting area so hopefully the experience will be as stress-free as possible!

3. The follow up

Depending on the course of your treatment, you may require follow up appointments in between each session with a final one scheduled for the end of your course. We like to allow at least 6 weeks until we re-assess the blemish in order to give it adequate time for optimal healing and downtime
