Larissa Warren, founder of The Expert Skin Clinic, has written an article for Professional Beauty Magazine discussing the importance of using the UV Index in treatment strategies.
Larissa starts by discussing why the UV index matters at all. She states that it is “one of the most influential yet underutilised factors in treatment planning” as it directly impacts skin behaviour, risk and outcomes. The skin treated in clinics is constantly responding to external stressors with UV exposure being the most impactful.
The UV index doesn’t just tell us how sunny it is, it tells us how intense the UV radiation is. Larissa says this “fluctuates daily and significantly influences barrier function, inflammation levels and melanocyte activity”.
A high period on the UV index will often result in increased sensitivity, dehydration, heightened pigmentation and a compromised barrier. We typically see this occur in late spring and summer. No one is immune to UV radiation, with clients who have the most resilient skin becoming reactive when not treated accordingly.
In order to effectively treat skin conditions in the high UV radiation, skin professionals must move from fixed protocols to responsive, skin-led treatment planning. Educating clients and building awareness around the UV index and the importance of SPF are the first steps to help clients understand why their skin might be behaving differently. Larissa adds that this “also improves compliance with pre- and aftercare, which becomes even more critical in warmer months”. Additionally, avoiding excess sun exposure and managing active ingredients, such as retinols, are essential in protecting outcomes and preventing complications.
So how do you adapt treatment without compromising on results? The treatment focus should shift towards supporting the skin rather than challenging it. This means selecting modalities that work with the skin, as opposed to against. At The Expert Skin Clinic, we use multi-technology systems to do exactly that. Larissa explains “by combining oxygenation, radiofrequency, microcurrent, focused pulsed light and needle-free infusion, we can adapt treatments based on both the client’s skin condition and the environmental context”.
This means that during high UV index periods, skin professionals are able to prioritise hydration, barrier repair and circulation whilst still achieving the desired results our clients wish for including, lifting, firming and visible rejuvenation.
Larissa also discusses how technology and diagnostics can be used to refine Fitzpatrick assessment. Accurate skin assessment is equally as important than adapting skin treatment to the UV index. Determining Fitzpatrick type is essential when considering UV exposure and potential pigmentation risk. However, in practice, it can sometimes be borderline between categories.
Platforms such as CACI’s Rejuva Med system allows for a skin scan which supports and strengthens the assessment process. This gives a clearer indication of where the skin sits on the Fitzpatrick scale. Larissa clarifies that “this enhances clinical judgement, reduces risk and ensures that treatment intensity and modality choice are appropriate, particularly in higher-risk cases”.
Skin professionals should also ensure to adjust pre- and aftercare advice during periods of high UV radiation exposure. To avoid overloading the skin, clients should avoid excessive sun exposure, heat-based activities post-treatment and temporarily removing active skincare.
Adapting treatment strategies in response to the UV index comes down to clinical responsibility. This responsibility reflects Larissa’s PATCH framework which encourages practitioners and clients to Pay Attention, take Action, Treat with intent, create Clarity and support Healing in long term skin health decisions.
“When we all take this approach, we not only protect the skin, we elevate the standard of care” - Larissa Warren, founder of The Expert Skin Clinic
